The Respiratory System: Respiration is the process in which oxygen is taken in, and carbon dioxide is released from, the body. During this process there occur breakdown of food material in the presence of oxygen gas that results in the release of energy. In organisms like bacteria breakdown of food material occur in the absence of oxygen gas.In aquatic organisms like fish respiration occur through gills.The respiratory system, in human beings, consists of organs like Mouth, trachea, lungs.
